3 Indicators that You Need Brake Repair

When we think about the kinds of situations where brakes are especially important, our minds tend to conjure up images of rainy or snowy weather. But in reality, there is no system more crucial to your safety every time you get behind the wheel, rain or shine. You could be the most defensive driver in the world, but you still never know when you might encounter a swerving drunk or a giant deer. Every time we drive, even just to the grocery store, we are trusting our brakes to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe from the hazards we are surrounded by. Therefore, at the first sign of any kind of brake trouble, it's a good idea to take the car into the shop as soon as possible.

With brakes, as with many components of your car, small problems can soon escalate into major disasters. When you first notice squealing, grinding, veering, or any other problem, you'll want to be sure to address the issue before it becomes more expensive---and more dangerous. There are a number of indicators that could mean it is time to get your brakes checked. Here are three of the common signs:

High-pitched squeaking

If you are hearing a piercing high note when you step on the brakes, it could very well mean that your brake pads have worn down to the point where the little piece of metal attached to the pad is not rubbing against the rotor. At this point, you might still have time before the problem becomes a nightmare, and you should get into the shop as soon as possible to nip the problem in the bud. Also, the sooner you take your car in, the sooner you can drive without having to listen to that gut-wrenching noise. But more importantly, by acting now, there's a good chance you're saving yourself from spending significantly more later.

The brakes are grinding

If it feels like your brakes are crunching when you hit the pedal, there's a good chance they've moved onto a higher stage of damage. This could mean that your brake pads have basically disintegrated and now you are just hoping that the discs themselves aren't badly damaged. At this point, you definitely want to get into the shop as quickly as you can because the longer you wait, the higher the repair costs are likely to be. And of greater consequence is the fact that you're brakes are not working properly and you're putting yourself and others at danger on the road.

Veering to one side

You shouldn't have to wrench your wheel to one side when applying the brakes. If braking is making your car veer in one direction, you need to get to the shop immediately. This is where it gets scary. It could mean that a caliper has frozen up because of corrosion. But really, the cause is less important at this point than actually getting your car off the road and to an auto pro. There really is no good reason at all to put yourself, your family, and the general public in harm's way.
